Income Tax Department Extends Deadline for Tax Audit Report Submission to October 31, 2025

Income Tax Audit report news: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has provided major relief to taxpayers and professionals by extending the deadline for filing the tax audit report for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26). The last date, which was earlier set as September 30, 2025, has now been extended to October 31, 2025.

Why the Extension Was Given

The extension comes after several representations from professional bodies and taxpayers citing difficulties in meeting the earlier deadline. Issues such as natural calamities, technical glitches, and disruptions were considered by the department before making this decision.

Who Is Affected

This extension applies to taxpayers who are required to get their accounts audited under the Income Tax Act — particularly those covered under clause (a) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139. These generally include businesses and professionals whose turnover or receipts cross the specified limits.

What If You Miss the Deadline?

If the tax audit report is not filed by the due date, penalties under Section 271B may apply. The penalty is usually 0.5% of turnover/gross receipts, up to a maximum of ₹1,50,000. However, if the taxpayer can show a valid reason for the delay, the penalty may be waived.

Important Note on ITR Filing

It is important to note that this extension only applies to the audit report submission date. The due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) in audit cases is still November 30, 2025. As of now, there is no official announcement about extending the ITR filing deadline.

Conclusions

New Deadline for Audit Report: October 31, 2025 (extended from September 30, 2025).
ITR Filing Deadline (Audit Cases): November 30, 2025 (unchanged).
Penalty for Missing Audit Report Deadline: 0.5% of total sales, turnover, or receipts, subject to a maximum of Rs 1,50,000 unless reasonable cause is proven.

This extension gives taxpayers and auditors extra time to complete and submit reports accurately, ensuring compliance without last-minute rush.
