However, the positive sentiment hasn\u2019t been universal\u2014while many welcomed the move, some expressed mixed feelings, and a few industries are openly dissatisfied with the changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Modi government has announced a major change in GST rates as part of the second-generation economic reforms. Now, GST will be applicable under only two slabs \u2013 5% and 18%. The GST Council has given unanimous approval to remove the 12% and 28% tax slabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A special 40% slab is kept only for luxury and \u201csin goods\u201d like tobacco, gutkha, pan masala, high-end cars, and sugary drinks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase in the new GST rate for labour charges, from 12% to 18%, has also led to some resistance, with small entrepreneurs saying that they would be hit hard by the change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GST 2.0 is a double dose of support and growth for the nation and the next-generation reforms have been done to support India\u2019s progress in the 21st century, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday (September 4, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal urged the industry to make a strong twin commitment to the Prime Minister &#8211; first, to pass on every rupee of savings from the GST reduction to consumers, and second, to actively promote Indian products.
